This is me, sitting in my office, smiling. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2019 did not start off this way at all. I have to say, 2019 was not great for me. I started off 2019 by slipping and falling down the stairs 3 times in one week (yes I was covered in bruises), slipped and fell in an icy driveway the same week I fell down the stairs, my laptop randomly broke and the lady at Best Buy said the files from my whole education and all my clients couldn't be recovered, I started my Nutrition Consultation business and made $0 in my first month, I realized my passport expired while I was crossing customs to go to Chicago, I started a long distance relationship, moved away from the love of my life and my family and friends in Toronto to pursue my dream career 4 hours away in Windsor and that's just off of the top of my head.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In 2019 failed a LOT and learned a LOT. It has been extremely hard to look at all these hard times as positive experiences but there's a lot that I'm also grateful for. After literally falling down and picking myself back up again, that's exactly what 2019 was for me. I got knocked down a lot and got right back up. I learned everything the hard way but at least I learned and grew in the process. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2019 also brought me to Montreal, Algonquin, Niagara-on-the-Lake and Chicago, I celebrated my 25th birthday, I had my first year of business, I bought my first car, I got a new laptop, my files DID end up transferring from my old laptop to my new one after many attempts, I furthered my education in nutrition and learned Live Blood Cell Analysis, went through major changes in my health, I made new friendships, a started a side business with my girlfriends from school (@askthenutritionists), I ate at a few different Michelin star restaurants in Chicago (Alinea & Oriole), I finished 3 books (4 by the end of the year) & so much more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I am ready for 2020, I am open to any and all possibilities!! ⁣Let’s talk about sweets around the holidays.. ⠀
⠀
⠀
So here are my thoughts: I started Nutrition Moderation around a time when there was confusion around several different diets and which one was the best for health (and nothing’s really changed since then). I was in school at Ryerson studying dietetics, learning about veganism, vegetarianism, the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet, keto, low carb, low sugar, low fat, etc, etc.⠀
⠀
⠀
Now although some of these diets are great and life saving in some cases, for the average person, extreme dieting and restriction doesn’t often work and can create a negative mindset around food. I’m a big fan of moderation for this reason and many reasons. Moderation combines listening to your body, listening to your cravings, not feeling guilty but also not overindulging.⠀
⠀
⠀
As a Nutritionist, I always have tips and tricks up my sleeve for upgrading my favourite desserts and snacks with better quality ingredients so I don’t feel deprived, especially during the holidays.⠀
⠀
⠀
So enjoy the holidays, enjoy the cookie, don’t feel guilty for enjoying a cookie, drink tons of water, spend precious time with friends and family, enjoy every moment while it lasts 💕 When should you start worrying about a missing periods? Amenorrhea or a missing period is when your period has gone missing for more than 3 months (with a regular cycle) or more than 6 months (with an irregular cycle). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here’s why you may be missing your period: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- PCOS ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Ovarian insufficiency ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Autoimmune disease⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Coming off birth control ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Pituitary dysfunction⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Hypothyroidism (low thyroid function) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What to do: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Make sure you’re getting enough nutrients to nourishing the body & balance hormones ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Seed cycling ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Getting enough rest⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Decreasing stress So for the past year or so I've been cutting way back on the gluten and have noticed a huge difference. I cut back on gluten when I moved back to my home town and started a new job. When I was living full time in Toronto I would walk everywhere! I would walk an hour to work and then another hour home after standing and running around at work. I was in great shape and felt great (besides the stress of school) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Then when I moved to a smaller town, I started driving everywhere and gained 10 lbs in less than one month. For someone who's 5'3 it made a big difference & I didn't feel like myself. So I decided to remove gluten & dairy from my diet and I noticed my stomach wasn't as distended. The number on the scale wasn't really important to me, it was more about how I felt. Now I still have gluten and dairy on occasion but I notice when I don't have it my blood sugar is much more balanced & my stomach feels way less bloated. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There's a few brands I recommend to my clients when going gluten free, one of which being @livivafoods. I've been having it since last November and have been testing it out in a ton of different recipes. So far, big thumbs up! Anyone else love Brussels Sprouts? I could just eat them all day every day 😍 Let's talk Hormonal Imbalance⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Do you have heavy, painful periods?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Do you have cysts on your ovaries?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Are you experiencing infertility?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Do you have insomnia?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Do you have extra weight around your belly?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Do you experience extreme fatigue? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Do you have hair loss? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Are you experiencing brain fog?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Do you have low libido? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you experience any of these or a combination of these symptoms, it's most likely a hormonal imbalance. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Hormonal Imbalance can be due to:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-High Estrogen or Low Estrogen⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-High Testosterone or Low Testosterone⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-Low Progesterone⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-High or Low Cortisol⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-High or Low Thyroid
